The Beyond Busking Programme was established to transform the lives of street and subway buskers by equipping them with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to grow into professional artists. What began as a platform to recognise and uplift raw street talent has evolved into a structured development programme with measurable outcomes and international recognition.
The Training Programme
The programme combines artistic, business, and personal development training:
- Music and Performance Skills: Improving stage presence, repertoire, and technical excellence.
- Entrepreneurship and Business Training: Covering marketing, contracts, financial management, and digital presence.
- Professional Development: Building confidence, networking skills, and industry readiness.
- Exposure Opportunities: Auditions, live showcases, and access to recording studios.

Aims and Objectives
To provide street and subway musicians with professional training that enhances their artistic, technical, and entrepreneurial skills.
To create sustainable career pathways by linking grassroots talent to commercial and cultural industries.
To promote dignity and recognition for buskers as vital contributors to urban culture.
To foster international opportunities, showcasing South African talent on global stages.
Achievements
2022: A graduate secured a 6-month international contract in Spain, setting the tone for global opportunities.
2023: Another graduate earned a contract with the same company, which now requests annual auditions exclusively from our graduates.
2023: One artist recorded with a producer from the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.
Outcomes
The programme has demonstrated remarkable impact:
90% of graduates now secure regular paid performances, compared to sporadic or informal earnings prior to training.
International placements and collaborations have opened new horizons for artists.
Graduates transition from informal busking to sustainable careers, increasing their income and visibility.
The programme strengthens the creative economy by turning untapped street talent into professional contributors.
