Sometimes artists are just a step away from success, all it takes is a little bit of tweaking, collaboration and an introduction to the right producers and creatives in the industry. How do we define success? Success is a self-motivated individual whose core beliefs are positive. An individual who is flexible and adaptable, willing to change direction in a second to meet the demands and opportunities that present themselves. Success is someone who realizes that while you are taking action, you cannot fail. Success as a South African citizen, is realizing that by finding solutions and taking personal responsibility for every aspect of your life, you are adding value to our society. At every step of your journey you can give back, pay it forward, even if it is in the smallest way. We do not consider fame and fortune to be a success – that is just the cherry on the top. We value healthy, positive socially conscious individuals who can handle fame and success rather than idolizing famous artists who have no moral compass.
ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS
DIGITAL MEDIA & MARKETING
During Covid, those artists who had already built an online presence were better equipped to survive the pandemic. The need for digital marketing and media skills has reached a critical point in the success of artists’ careers. Art has been democratized through the internet as the digital world is a populist force, levelling the world between rich and poor, educated and uneducated.
One can describe the explosion of digital media as a transition from passive art to participatory art, from hierarchical art to democratic art, from traditional media to online media and from single art-form to inter-disciplinary.
A survey of arts organizations in the US found that they all agreed with the notion that the internet and social media have “increased engagement” and made art a more participatory experience, and that they have helped make “arts audiences more diverse.” There is a powerful opportunity for the arts to create communities around performances, shows, exhibitions and their themes and history. For example, a Broadway show like ‘Next to Normal’ could (and probably has) created communities to discuss and share resources on mental illness.
Technology simultaneously presents an opportunity and a challenge for artists. The inequities that grip the digital place-making field run parallel with those impacting the arts sector. To this end, CTAF in partnership with Girl hype, have designed a 6-month digital media programme to upskill artists, while they work to promote emerging artists. Girl hype is a BBBEEE company led by Baratang Mia, focused solely on female youth empowerment in the digital world. In the programme they will learn to navigate new challenges artists are facing in the art world today – the art and music generated by AI, can potentially leave certain members of the arts community jobless. 10 artists are selected after the boot camp to participate in this intensive six month programme while working to support 50 other emerging artists from underserved communities creating a healthy online community of artists for artists.
